"Spaced Out"
A short film directed and created by meStory and Animation Development Below!
When I set out to make this film I began by sketching out the story beats that were most important to me.
To me, this film is about accepting that the things we fear most likely aren't as bad as they seem. Additionally the film is meant to showcase the serene beauty inherent to the world we live in, and the importance of appreciating it as we go through our day to day lives.
After getting enough sketching down I worked out a visual story beat for every shot I intended to have in the film.
I felt that in order to fully demonstrate the futility of worry and stress, it would be good to show the main character at her most distressed and panicked, only to then present her with an undeniably beautiful and awe inspiring experience.
With the story beats laid out I then started developing the beats into storyboards and laid out designs for both the main characters.
The ending proved to be one of my favorite parts of the film in the end. The section of the film that takes place in space is meant to challenge the girl one more time on her ability to enjoy the moment she's presently in, despite things that may be suggesting she should instead worry.
I felt being stranded without a body in orbit around earth would be a good place to put that to practice.

Color Script
The color inspiration for the outdoor portions of the film come from memorable experiences I've had on late walks in my own life.
A cool purple and a very warm yellow come out to be my favorite approach for capturing the warm glow of street lights and the distant glimmer of buildings below stars.
After all the boards were laid out and I'd recorded all the audio for the film, I then got to start fleshing out the animation of the overall film one shot a time!
